Gloriae Dei Cantores has devoted much time and work in the last nine months to the musical and dramatic preparation for four performances of Ralph Vaughan Williams’s opera, The Pilgrim’s Progress. The choir last presented the work in 2005 and this year the performances are part of a symposium on arts and spirituality that will be happening at the end of October 2017. This is a celebration of the 500th anniversary of the Reformation and promises to be an exciting weekend of performances and lectures. More about that another time.
In the meantime, most recently, Gloriae Dei Cantores spent several days working on their dramatic skills with Joanna Weir of the Central School of Speech and Drama in London. We are now looking forward to working with several guest soloists in the next two weeks to work on a number of scenes with them. The process has made all of us think deeply about the characters in relation to ourselves, and to put forth the most honest portrayal and work on keeping a high musical standard while in motion on stage; not the easiest thing, we have found! More news to come, stay tuned.
