Gloriæ Dei Cantores has been reviewing musical details and movement for each of the major choruses of Vaughan Williams’s The Pilgrim’s Progress this past week. One endlessly fascinating aspect of studying this score is how Vaughan Williams vividly characterizes each choral scene. House Beautiful in Act I is richly beautiful while Vanity Fair in Act III is by turns, coarse, sensual and disturbing. Every time we look at the score it reveals more about the nuances that make it realistic. We try to dig deeper into the characters that make this piece so rewarding. October 27th will be here soon!
