Things are really ramping up for Gloriae Dei Cantores’ and Elements Theatre Company’s collaborative presentation of The Pilgrim’s Progress opera by Ralph Vaughan Williams at the end of October. Costumes are getting fitted, lighting and projections are coming and will be loaded in next week, music is getting polished, and program information is almost ready. Recently, we have had the privilege of having Dorothy Richardson, a voice teacher from England and longtime friend of the choir, working with soloists and choir on diction, movement and vocal issues. We have also been working on the integration of singing and movement and deepening our understanding and projection of the many characters. So, very shortly, we will be moving into our performance venue, the Church of the Transfiguration, and working out technical issues until the final rehearsals.
In the media world, there’s quite a “buzz” about what’s happening and the fact that this rarely performed operatic masterpiece is being staged again in the United States. MusicWeb International has recently posted about the opera. Some are saying it’s an important revival.
