At the end of last week, Gloriae Dei Cantores had the privilege of working with Patrice Egleston. Patrice teaches at DePaul University and has worked with many groups in the area of stage movement and combat. No, Gloriae Dei is not going to fight during their concerts! However, they are engaging in stage combat during several scenes of Ralph Vaughan Williams’s ‘The Pilgrim’s Progress’. We had a great time learning how to make realistic any scene of conflict, how to handle swords, bow staffs, and knives onstage, and moving with specificity around the stage. Patrice was a great teacher and we all enjoyed our time with her.
Now we all look forward to welcoming several guest soloists in the next two weeks who are here to work on their parts in blocking rehearsals. For many of us who have never worked in an opera production, this will be a fascinating time as we observe opera singers honing their craft. More later!
